In Tuscany stone pine forests (Pinus pinea L.) have characterized the coastal landscape for about five centuries. Over time coastal stone pine forests have provided many ecosystem services. The sustainable management of these forest systems requires detailed and updated information. The objectives of this study were to map the current distribution of stone pine forests along the Tuscan coast and estimate their standing volume. We examined the strip of land within 2 km of the Tuscan coastline. The map of pine forests (scale 1:10 000) was produced by photointerpretation of digital orthophotos. We used a linear regression model based on LiDAR data and field measurements to estimate the volume. Results show that stone pine forests amounted to 10,660 ha. The accuracy of the model used to estimate the volume (R2 = 0.79; RMSE% = 22 %) was similar to that obtained by other authors.
