We present a novel compact hybrid coupler based on the concept of artificial transmission lines i.e. transmission lines loaded with reactive loads at both ends. A combination of longer and shorter lines are used, in order to balance the reactive loading, effectively allowing for their mutual cancellation. This mechanism is applied to the design of hybrid couplers with different aspect ratios, with respect to the classical square one.

Abstract
