WBANs are envisioned as a key technology for enabling health services in the very next future. A body-centered system relying on the collection of information from sensors placed in or on the body and the transmission of this data to the cloud medical server requires new security solutions. Security for communication within the body is still a less investigated area that needs to be addressed due to the the challenging limited resources of the involved nodes. Starting both from the analysis of the most critical communication links of the WBAN reference architecture and from the security threats and requirements, an overview of the state-of-the-art of the security challenges and solutions for WBAN applications is presented.

Abstract

WBANs are envisioned as a key technology for enabling health services in the very next future. A body-centered system relying on the collection of information from sensors placed in or on the body and the transmission of this data to the cloud medical server requires new security solutions. Security for communication within the body is still a less investigated area that needs to be addressed due to the the challenging limited resources of the involved nodes. Starting both from the analysis of the most critical communication links of the WBAN reference architecture and from the security threats and requirements, an overview of the state-of-the-art of the security challenges and solutions for WBAN applications is presented.
