Since the invention of the laser the problems of optical propagation through the atmosphere, long familiar to the astronomers, have received increased interest both experimentally and theoretically, in view of many possible applications. Many problems still remain and the paper presents a critical review of some of these problems, such as those arising when constructing models for turbulence or for aerosols. The main trends of research in this area are outlined.

Abstract

Since the invention of the laser the problems of optical propagation through the atmosphere, long familiar to the astronomers, have received increased interest both experimentally and theoretically, in view of many possible applications. Many problems still remain and the paper presents a critical review of some of these problems, such as those arising when constructing models for turbulence or for aerosols. The main trends of research in this area are outlined.
