Nephron sparing surgery (NSS) has been proposed in T1b kidney cancer cases due to potential benefits in terms of functional outcomes. However, NSS is often challenging and it may be associated with an increased risk of intraoperative complications, such as haemorrhage. Some reports suggested that intraoperative blood loss (BL) may affect the long-term renal function after surgery. We aimed to test the effect of BL on the risk to develop chronic kidney disease (CKD)after accounting for well-known predictors of renal failure, such as cardiovascular comorbidities and patients' life habits.
