Developing a new telecommunication protocol is a complex process, particularly during the standardization process. Usually, during a standard development, it is necessary to evaluate different alternatives, ensure the protocol correctness, and provide a reference implementation. Toward this end, ns-3 can be used as a rapid prototyping tool, especially due to the simulation and emulation models. In this paper we will outline the development of an aeronautical communication standard in ns-3, the problems we faced, and how ns-3 could be extended in order to better support this kind of scenario.

Abstract

Developing a new telecommunication protocol is a complex process, particularly during the standardization process. Usually, during a standard development, it is necessary to evaluate different alternatives, ensure the protocol correctness, and provide a reference implementation. Toward this end, ns-3 can be used as a rapid prototyping tool, especially due to the simulation and emulation models. In this paper we will outline the development of an aeronautical communication standard in ns-3, the problems we faced, and how ns-3 could be extended in order to better support this kind of scenario.
