Through this contribution we intend to illustrate the different challenges that the family is called to face following the severe burn of the child in pediatric age using a general model designed by Kazak and collaborators for the Pediatric Traumatic Medical Stress (PMTS). In order to identify the main difficulties and the related psychological responses in each of the three phases that make up the model, the assumptions contained in it were compared with the data present in the literature about the psychological consequences of pediatric burns. In addition to a careful analysis of the main quantitative data present in the literature, particular attention was paid to qualitative studies with the aim of offering the reader an insight into the possible trajectories that the subjective experience of parents can take during the dramatic experience that goes from the injury to the recovery of everyday life. Finally, in the concluding section, the theme of guilt and the experiences of blame often associated with the burn event, which risk compromising relationships within the family with negative consequences on the functioning of individuals and of the entire family system, was explored.
