A method is developed for the investigation of the electromagnetic propagation in cladded optical fibers, having an arbitrary profile n=n(r) of the refractive index inside the core. The method consists in searching, for a given profile of n, which is the refractive index of the cladding necessary to sustain a mode with a given longitudinal propagation constant. TE and TM modes are obtained and examples are reported in some particular cases.
