ESCO (European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations) is a multilingual classification of occupations together with skills, competences and qualifications, promoted by the European Commission. The topological structure of the classification could give important keys to labor market interpretation. In this respect, an interesting perspective is the analysis of the relation between occupations by means of network methodology. In this paper a complex network is defined considering occupations as nodes and common skills as activators of links (or edges) between nodes. This setting permits to investigate the effectiveness of the classification in providing useful insights.

Abstract

ESCO (European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations) is a multilingual classification of occupations together with skills, competences and qualifications, promoted by the European Commission. The topological structure of the classification could give important keys to labor market interpretation. In this respect, an interesting perspective is the analysis of the relation between occupations by means of network methodology. In this paper a complex network is defined considering occupations as nodes and common skills as activators of links (or edges) between nodes. This setting permits to investigate the effectiveness of the classification in providing useful insights.
