The work of the architect Turgut Cansever (1921-2009) is illustrative of an approach that considers the Turkish city, in particular Istanbul, as a reference, interpreted as a set of historical layers. According to Cansever, as the Ottoman city has developed not imposing itself on the Byzantine one, rather establishing new relationships between different and opposite elements, in the same way the contemporary city must be able to deal with its past.
