The language of discovery, exploration and settlement

The volume examines the language and discourse employed in the historical narration and reporting of geographical discovery, exploration and settlement. These three features of human existence lie at the very centre of society’s evolution and development and the volume analyses their narration in historically contemporaneous documents from a linguistic and rhetorical point of view. The fifteen essays in the book examine the language and discourse employed in historical accounts of discovery, exploration and settlement stretching from the 16th-19th centuries and covering areas as far afield as the Americas, Africa, India, Australasia and the Arctic.
