GLOSSES OF MAKSIM GREK’S MISCELLANYIN THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF FRANCE: BETWEEN LEXICOGRAPHY AND EXEGESIS Analyzing the glossеs of Maksim Grek’s miscellany in the National Library of France (Man. The glosses can be divided into groups according to different categories. Among them are references to Biblical vocabulary and Biblical realities, vocabulary and realia of ancient classics, medical and scientific explanations. Biblical quotations can be mentioned, adapted or entered in a more complete form. At the same time there are more or less extensive explanations of theological and ascetic nature. This hermeneutic work was carried out under the sign of symbolic and allegorical culture, which, as was the case with Maksim Grek, was realized both at the level of relations between Greek and Slavic, and at the level of interpretation of individual languages. The analysis reveals the linguistic sensitivity and at the same time the pedagogical efforts of the monk, whose goal was to off er the reader the most important exegetic tools and methods aimed at protecting the Eastern tradition from the revival of classical culture and from the dryness of Latin scholastics, which in their own way broke into Russian world. The philological activity of Maksim Grek shows him as a representative of the humanistic Renaissance culture and the initiator of the process of transplanting a new culture into the Church Slavonic tradition.

Abstract

GLOSSES OF MAKSIM GREK’S MISCELLANYIN THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF FRANCE: BETWEEN LEXICOGRAPHY AND EXEGESIS Analyzing the glossеs of Maksim Grek’s miscellany in the National Library of France (Man. Slave 123), the author suggests entering the laboratory of Maksim Grek in order to understand his approach to language and text intepretation.
