The article wants to highlight the constructive tradition of one of the most important neighborhoods of Shanghai and how through the documentation it is possible to activate a virtuous process of protection and requalification of an important urban context of the city. A joint research project born from the international collaboration between the workshop of Professor Stefano Bertocci of the University of Florence and the Restoration Laboratory of Professor Cao Younkang of the Faculty of Architecture of ]iao Tong University in Shanghai, with the aim and common intent to understand and study some cases of Shikumen of Shanghai. The Shikumen of the Dong Siwenli District in the district of ]in'an has been analysed from various points of view: Historical being this typology of building the input of the urban development of the city; Compositional identifying the uniqueness of the western and Eastern Stylistic union; Because by studying the needs of the population in the various historical periods we understand the architectural transformation; Cultural having these conferred a unique identity to the city. The international collaboration between the two different departments is aimed at improving the possible conservation and protection interventions that will be undertaken by the administration and far this reason the research constitutes a methodological process of analysis Documental which focuses on the serious criticalities of degradation of this place, which is characterized by being included in the list of the hundred protected historical sites of the city.
