Aldo Rossi e il progetto per la piazza di Üsküdar a Istanbul

The project for Üsküdar Square is barely known and apparently distant from Turkish culture. However, the comparison with the original urban design competition call – issued by the Greater Istanbul Municipality – and the archival documents and drawings, allows a better understanding of Rossi’s good intentions. For Rossi, in Istanbul, architecture and its site are one and the same. The contrast between old and new ceases to exist and, through the interpretation of the urban facts, the architect tries to develop a forward-looking architecture
