Abstract To cope with the threat of the epidemic spreading of COVID-19, the problem of the correct design of the air conditioning and ventilation systems, and the indoor healthiness, therefore, the air quality control for hygiene and healthcare aimed at abatement and reduction of the virus spreading risks, has become so important and mandatory as to require a necessary change in the methodological design approach, especially in public buildings such as schools and even more, if they are located inside historic buildings of cultural heritage. The need for adequate air renewal, not only for reasons of quality/health of the internal environment, but above all for reasons of protection of human health, changes the perspective of analysis, and in this our present study, the controlled mechanical ventilation (CMV) systems, become the main aim of the proposed design solutions which, for buildings with a high crowding index with significant room volumes, such as the one studied, involved a greater construction and management impact, for any type of proposed solution. The proposed methodological approach is based on optimal solutions based on compliance between the requirements of quality and hygiene of the environment and the architectural ones, and has allowed us to show how it is technically possible to improve usability in safety, hygiene and health, but also the well-being within the spaces of the school, which does not compromise its historical and architectural values. Energy saving, energy-environmental sustainability and the efficiency and effectiveness of design solutions to ensure quality and environmental health, human health and well-being, were however considered guiding parameters for plant system design.
