Abstract

Mountaineering has an exclusive history in terms of gender and social composition, but today it has a significant level of popularity and diffusion. Through several moments in which this activity has become popular, the article traces how this cultural practice has established an ambiguous and complex relationship with the sport. Since the first half of the 20th century, alpinism has increasingly focused on performance and on its competitive character, without however fully adhering to the institutionalization of the sporting dimension.
