Abstract

The increased awareness of the need to reorganize urban areas in more sustainable and resilient forms requires us to reflect on the current meaning of urban design, starting from those experiences that have most highlighted its ability to synthesize heterogeneous and sometimes conflicting social demands, functional needs and urban materials. On the theoretical level, the contribution resumes the concept of civic design (Scott Brown, 1990). to identify a specific area of urban design with a strong public direction. The focal assumption is that, updating it in the light of contemporary needs (summarized in four pairs of keywords: sustainable-resilient, green-healthy, livable-inclusive and smart-creative) ci vie design can act both as an effective interpretative key and a design paradigm fora new ·responsible urbanity", based on the federative potential of public space.
