We develop a method to measure the outer scale of the atmospheric turbulence, based on the correlation function of lateral displacements, wandering, of thin laser beams. Two parallel beams after an atmospheric path impinge on a screen. The "in plane" fluctuations are measured, for different spacing between the beams and the correlation function of these fluctuations is derived. It is shown theoretically and experimentally that, by increasing the spacing, the normalised in plane correlation, starting from unity for spacing zero, decreases becoming negative and after reaching a minimum value tends to zero. The value of the beam spacing where the correlation crosses the axis, allows us to obtain the value of the outer scale of the turbulence.

Abstract
We develop a method to measure the outer scale of the atmospheric turbulence, based on the correlation function of lateral displacements, wandering, of thin laser beams. Two parallel beams after an atmospheric path impinge on a screen. The "in plane" fluctuations are measured, for different spacing between the beams and the correlation function of these fluctuations is derived. It is shown theoretically and experimentally that, by increasing the spacing, the normalised in plane correlation, starting from unity for spacing zero, decreases becoming negative and after reaching a minimum value tends to zero. The value of the beam spacing where the correlation crosses the axis, allows us to obtain the value of the outer scale of the turbulence.I documenti in FLORE sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
