Libertarian paternalism pursuits a synthesis between liberalism and paternalism, suggesting a widespread use of «nudges», choice architectures that exploit human biases. In this way private and public choice architects can steer people’s choices, promoting their ends and leaving them free to choose otherwise. In this paper I try to show that this use of nudges is manipulative and morally troubling.

Abstract

Libertarian paternalism pursuits a synthesis between liberalism and paternalism, suggesting a widespread use of «nudges», choice architectures that exploit human biases. In this way private and public choice architects can steer people’s choices, promoting their ends and leaving them free to choose otherwise. In this paper I try to show that this use of nudges is manipulative and morally troubling.
