This article focusses on the cultural translability of emotions related to disasters. It takes a hanging scroll by Shiba Kōkan (1747-1818) as a starting point to explore the emotional response of individuals and communities from distant cultures and places in the face of disasters, in particular earthquakes and fires. The article was commissioned for the special Occasion issue "On Fire" edited by Grace Moore.
