The consolidation of the foundations of Colloid Science laid down by Overbeek and Deryaguin is explored. Hans Lyklema represents a whole generation of colleagues in the post war period who led the consoldation. How the foundations evolved and were rebuilt into a more sophicated predictive discipline is also explored. The new discipline underpins the entire enabling subject of physical chemistry.
