In this paper we investigate the stability of the unidirectional flow of a suspension via a linear analysis. The suspension is treated as a spatially inhomogeneous fluid with viscosity that depends on the particles volume fraction. The latter evolves according to a diffusion-convection equation. The analysis is developed following either a classical normal-mode approach and a non modal approach. The results of this study highlight that regions of stability may appear in the parameters space. These regions however critically depend on the particle distribution on the channel cross section.

Abstract

In this paper we investigate the stability of the unidirectional flow of a suspension via a linear analysis. The suspension is treated as a spatially inhomogeneous fluid with viscosity that depends on the particles volume fraction. The latter evolves according to a diffusion-convection equation. The analysis is developed following either a classical normal-mode approach and a non modal approach. The results of this study highlight that regions of stability may appear in the parameters space. These regions however critically depend on the particle distribution on the channel cross section.
