Last October a dramatic earthquake hit the area on the border between two Italian regions, Umbria and Marche, the same area where the painter Paolo di Giovanni da Visso (active ca. 1430-1480) worked during his career. Paolo was a pupil of Bartolomeo di Tommaso da Foligno, but his production is also influenced by the style of Lorenzo and Jacopo Salimbeni. These stylistic features can be perceived in a little studied fresco inside the Collegiata of San Ginesio, representing a Crucifixion, which could refer to the artist’s early training. The article offers other hints on Paolo’s works (especially in Visso, Ussita, Castelsantangelo sul Nera and Cascia), many of which unfortunately are in buildings damaged by the earthquake.

Abstract
Last October a dramatic earthquake hit the area on the border between two Italian regions, Umbria and Marche, the same area where the painter Paolo di Giovanni da Visso (active ca. 1430-1480) worked during his career. Paolo was a pupil of Bartolomeo di Tommaso da Foligno, but his production is also influenced by the style of Lorenzo and Jacopo Salimbeni. These stylistic features can be perceived in a little studied fresco inside the Collegiata of San Ginesio, representing a Crucifixion, which could refer to the artist’s early training. The article offers other hints on Paolo’s works (especially in Visso, Ussita, Castelsantangelo sul Nera and Cascia), many of which unfortunately are in buildings damaged by the earthquake.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
