This writing aims to reflct on the various possible approaches and tools employed by social scientists to analyse corruption. The study starts by discussing the main issues related to the defiition and the measurement of the phenomenon. Then it discusses the relative strengths and limitations of the objective and subjective indicators and the implications of the direct and indirect methods. It concludes with a review of some Italian mixed methods studies that integrate qualitative and quantitative data with a focus on contextual variables.
