In this paper we study the one dimensional unsteady Poiseuille flow of an Herschel-Bulkley fluid driven by a prescribed pressure gradient. We formulate the mathematical problem that turns out to be a degenerate parabolic free boundary problem for the stress field. For such a problem we prove existence and uniqueness of a classical solution having a regular free boundary.
