Political realism and critical attitude have mostly constituted two opposite ways of relating to the political and social world. Critique has often had to confront the limits of what is possible, while reality has frequently been played against aspirations for other political institutions and / or for another way of life in society. The critical realism proposed here is, therefore, in many ways an oxymoron. A strange creature that tries, however, to overcome the limits, the aporias, the paradoxes and, above all, the adaptive outcomes typical of an a-critical realism and the lack of effectiveness and reflexivity of a critique, in some sense, unrealistic. The perspective is, therefore, that of a joint declination of realism and critique in which criticism invests realism itself and in which realism is thought of as a component and not as a limit of the critical effort. Realism thus constitutes both the object of criticism, its target, and the factor that induces critique to reflect on its own, always contingent, potential, on the burdens of one's action and on the conditions of one's own effectiveness. Reality loses any normative value and becomes the tool for awareness of the effects and costs of critical posture.
