An intuitive description is given of a phenomenological model for the formation of Cooper pairs in cuprate superconductors. In this model, coupling is mediated by large lattice strains connected to anharmonic oscillations along ĉ of the apical ions. A pair binding energy of the order of several hundred kelvin was obtained. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
