The “Festa della Porchetta” in Bologna: stage design, machinery and popular attractions

Evento civico di lunga storia, la bolognese Festa della Porchetta fu una grande “macchina teatrale” per il consenso che, almeno a partire dalla fine del Cinquecento, utilizzò diverse tipologie artistiche, letterarie, musicali e spettacolari per veicolare le ambizioni degli Anziani – importante Magistratura cittadina cui era demandata l’organizzazione della festa – e, più in generale, dell’aristocrazia senatoria felsinea di cui gli Anziani facevano parte. Fu anche un momento culminante dell'effimero di Stato e permise di assegnare a Bologna il posto che le spettava tra le capitali europee dello spettacolo di Antico Regime. L’intervento illustrerà alcuni allestimenti sei-settecenteschi utili a dimostrare la qualità inventiva degli artisti coinvolti nonché alcuni elementi come la danza, la musica e l’utilizzo della macchineria che caratterizzarono la festa. A civic event of a long history, the Bolognese “Festa della Porchetta” was a great “theatrical machine” for consensus that, at least from the end of the 16th Century, used different artistic, literary, musical and spectacular typologies to convey the ambitions of the Anziani - an important magistracy entrusted with the organisation of the festival - and, more generally, of the senatorial aristocracy of Bologna to which the Anziani were parted. It was also a highlight of the ephemeral State and allowed Bologna to be assigned its rightful place among the European capitals of the spectacle of Ancient Regime. The paper will illustrate some 17th and 18th century stage designs that demonstrate the inventive quality of the artists involved as well as some elements such as dance, music and the use of machinery that characterised the festival.
