DE CIUDADANO A USUARIO. CAPITALISMO, DEMOCRACIA Y REVOLUCIÓN DIGITAL

The paradigm of modern citizenship, in which individuals moved within political communities to which they felt accountable, has come to an end. The citizen has become a consumer, a mere passive user of the vari- ous services on offer, expressing his or her decisions in the same way as he or she expresses his or her purchasing preferences. If the user’s life is increasingly projected onto the web, the individual political and legal dimension also suf- fers the same fate. We are thus witnessing a comprehensive datafication of the personality, with very significant consequences in terms of the effective protec- tion of freedoms and the concrete exercise of fundamental rights. Democratic discourse is no longer possible because the user is structurally aphasic: there is no discourse, only opinions, in a fragmented and polarized cyberspace, where people can make their convictions resound without any openness to dialogue and often with a violence hybrid - suspended between the virtual and the real - but no less terrible.
