The market left to its own devices, as we have seen in recent years, contributes to increasing economic and social inequalities by failing to provide fairness. Above all, it reinforces the mechanisms of social exclusion to the extent that new categories of weak - think of the working poor - or disadvantaged subjects have emerged with regard to job placement. This phenomenon thus erodes the premises on which democratic systems, based on the principle of equality of citizens, rest. The greatest risk is that people who are not recognised as 'useful' according to market criteria will not be recognised as equals by the community of citizens, losing their identity and dignity as subjects. If people who are economically and socially excluded become invisible in the eyes of those who are in the majority in society and hold positions of power - and this happens more than we think - social cohesion is also compromised.
