In historic buildings, the horizontal internal partition and upper closing of the buildings were commonly made with a wooden structure, with the only alternative of masonry vaults. In timber floors and roofs, most of the elements are subject to bending. Various situations – including defects, degradation or damage to the material, changes in intended use or regulatory changes – can lead to the belief that the flexural strength of an element is insufficient. From this emerges the need to strengthen the construction element, and this puts the technician in front of various technical alternatives. This choice and the design development of the system presuppose a full awareness of the potential and criticalities of each alternative. The article will propose a systematic analysis of the trussed beam technique: after having carried out a critical reading of the historical sources, the potential and criticality of this technique for the strengthening of timber structures subject to bending will be analyzed.

Abstract
