This article aims at investigating how Italian institutions and political leaders have revised their communication strategies in response to the informative needs of citizens during the Covid-19 pandemic. Some of the crucial challenges during these difficult times were the local response to global issues, communicating in and outside of the institutions and managing extraordinary activities together with ordinary relationships and goals. The article addresses this scenario in an everchanging digital environment and illustrates the main findings of a wider study concerning the use of Facebook by Italian institutions and political leaders in 2020. Finally, it offers a reflection on key issues that, although arising and/or spreading during the pandemic, represent realistic future development for the institutional and political communications of the Country.
