La tipografia ferrarese del primo Seicento: dalle eredi Baldini a Francesco Suzzi

In 1618 Vittorio Baldini - the greatest printer in Ferrara between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries - died without leaving any male heirs. He was succeeded in the management of the printing house by his widow and niece Vittoria. The two women, thanks to the technical contribution of Bernardo Gaetti (a former Baldini worker), printed a few editions up to 1621, labelling them "heirs of". In the meantime, the name of Francesco Suzzi, a merchant, appears in the subscriptions of the Ferrara books, and in a few years he became the printer of the Legation. This article reconstructs the first years of Francesco's activity, who presumably inherited Baldini's types through his son's marriage to Vittoria. From 1619 to 1630 he alone dominated the Ferrara printing scene, although his production remained modest in terms of both quantity and quality.
