Paper presented at the International Conference "1972-2022. World Heritage in transition. About management, protection and sustainability", Florence, 18-19 November 2022. The paper describes the methodology and the main results of a research carried out by the Department of Architecture of the University of Florence on behalf of the Municipality of Florence, concerning the analysis and classification of the basic urban fabric in the historic parts of the city, for the purpose of the drawing up of the new zoning and development plan. The research drew directly on original cartographic sources for the construction of the basic cognitive framework in a GIS environment, and on the scientific literature for the identification of evaluation criteria for the historic buildings to which the new regulations should refer. Hence, proposals were made to change the zoning of the existing plan and to classify buildings in ‘Zone A’, which includes the historic settlement, on a typological basis.
