The relationship between protection and management of cultural heritage, and local development processes is a much-discussed topic in the international literature of Heritage Studies and Urban Studies. They show the overcom-ing of a protective restriction vision, spatially limited to single areas, and the rising of an idea of heritage as place for the activation of shared local projects, integrated with the wider territorial, environmental, social, and economic system. Starting from these theoretical assumptions, the paper claims that the building process of the Parc naturel et agricol des Jalles, in the Bordeaux metropolitan area, could be a driver to provide 'proximity' products and services for the neighboring UNESCO areas of Bordeaux, Port de la Lune, thus guaranteeing their active protection. The Parc des Jalles institution path has been co-constructed with local communities, in a participatory process that had the au-thors as co-responsible.
