In sonnet XVI of Petrarch’s Canzoniere, the reference to the veil of Veronica, which according to tradition bears the likeness of the face of Jesus not made by human hand, allow us to investigate the historical and theological background of the vera icon (true image), in close connection with the «forma vera» (Rvf XVI 14) of Laura. The modern portrait is associated with the ancient representations of the Holy Face.

Abstract

In sonnet XVI of Petrarch’s Canzoniere, the reference to the veil of Veronica, which according to tradition bears the likeness of the face of Jesus not made by human hand, allow us to investigate the historical and theological background of the vera icon (true image), in close connection with the «forma vera» (Rvf XVI 14) of Laura. The modern portrait is associated with the ancient representations of the Holy Face.
