Shortly after his arrival in Palestine, in 1934, Erich Mendelsohn was commissioned by Salman Schocken to build a villa and library in the Rehavia neighborhood in Jerusalem. The Schocken Library, which also houses the Research Institute for Hebrew Poetry, is one of the architect’s first works in the Holy Land and represents a “cornerstone” of the wishes for a material and spiritual reconstruction of Palestine.
