Un "celebre santuario" campano. Immagini di Pompei in Italia tra fascismo e prima Repubblica

Il 26 ottobre 1980 Bartolo Longo, fondatore del santuario di Pompei, fu beatificato insieme a don Luigi Orione. Nel dare notizia dell’evento, la stampa italiana (anche cattolica) manifestò, con poche eccezioni, una certa predilezione per Orione, dedicando servizi meno ampi alla figura di Longo, o ignorandolo del tutto. Lo scopo del saggio è quello di far emergere almeno alcune delle motivazioni di tale attenzione minore alla figura dell’avvocato salentino, attraverso la ricostruzione delle immagini forgiatene dalle sue biografie e dalle storie del santuario pubblicate in Italia tra la fondazione di quest’ultimo e gli anni che precedono la beatificazione. On 26 October 1980 Bartolo Longo, founder of the shrine of Pompeii, was beatified along with Don Luigi Orione. In reporting the event, the Italian press (also Catholic) showed, with few exceptions, a certain predilection for Orione, devoting less space to the figure of Longo, or ignoring him completely. The purpose of the essay is to bring to light at least some of the reasons for this lesser attention to the figure of the Salento lawyer, by reconstructing images of him that have been forged in his biographies and in the histories of the sanctuary published in Italy between its foundation and the years preceding his beatification.
