Attività edilizia a Gortina sotto l’episcopato di Vetranio: rilettura di un’iscrizione proveniente da Mavropapa

n 1980, in an olive grove in the area of Mavropapa (Gortina) among the ruins separating two properties, an inscription was found. It was published for the first time by Lidio Gasperini in 1988 and recently republished by Salvatore Cosentino in 2019, now is kept in the warehouse of the SAIA mission house in Aghii Deka. A smaller anepigraph fragment has been joined toit. The rereading of the text makes it possible to read the name of Vetranios, bishop of Gortina of the late 6th century AD. He is already known from an inscription in the mosaic floor of the basilica of Mitropolis in Gortina and from the monograms on the four capitals of the churches of San Tito (Gortina) and Matala. The text could record, on a reused ancient support, a building intervention inside the church of Mavropapa.
