The aim of this essay is to sketch a framework in order to interpret the economic development of Republican Italy from the end of WWII to the pandemic shock of 2020 by combining the outcomes of a few historical disciplines, namely, economic history, political history, and the history of economic policy. The essay is divided into three parts corresponding to the great stages in the history of Republican Italy.
