From the second edition of 1630, the Vitae and Res Gestae Pontificum Romanorum of the Spanish Dominican Alonso Chacón are enriched by chalcographic plates that offer the reader a visualization of the historia sacra centered on the sepulchral monuments and the papal medals. In the same years, much attention is devoted to the reconstruction of the pontiff's clothes during the Middle Ages. These antiquarian researches can have contemporary consequences, related to the criticism of sacred artistic production, or to the repechage of papal iconographies of the past.
