The aim of the article is to show how, during the seventeenth century, the towns of Massa and Carrara, in Northern Tuscany, were reached and affected by the artistic trends coming from Rome. The three main arts were influenced, in different ways, by this Roman wave; a major role in this process must be ascribed to cardinal Alderano Cybo (1613-1700), who sent from Rome many artworks. Some of them are still in the two towns; special attention is drawn on a beautiful Crucifix at the Museo Diocesano of Massa, made after the model created by Bernini and Ferrata for the altars of St. Peter's.

Abstract

The aim of the article is to show how, during the seventeenth century, the towns of Massa and Carrara, in Northern Tuscany, were reached and affected by the artistic trends coming from Rome. The three main arts were influenced, in different ways, by this Roman wave; a major role in this process must be ascribed to cardinal Alderano Cybo (1613-1700), who sent from Rome many artworks. Some of them are still in the two towns; special attention is drawn on a beautiful Crucifix at the Museo Diocesano of Massa, made after the model created by Bernini and Ferrata for the altars of St. Peter's.
