The Monastery of Sant Miquel d’Escornalbou (Tarragona, Spain): multidisciplinary research for the understanding of the relation between the religious complex, the territory and the European Franciscan network

Il paper si inserisce nell'ambito del progetto europeo F-ATLAS - Franciscan Landscapes. The Observance between Italy, Portugal and Spain. Questo lavoro ha permesso di mappare le fasi di espansione dell'Osservanza dalle prime fondazioni - della fine del XIV secolo - fino all'esclaustrazione della metà del XIX secolo. L'analisi di questo gran numero di dati georeferenziati ha permesso di individuare i diversi modelli di impianto monastico. Tra i conventi la cui origine non è legata all'ordine degli Osservanti, spicca per monumentalità e ricchezza storica il caso di Sant Miquel d'Escornalbou (Baix Camp, Tarragona), caso studio di approfondimento della presente ricerca. This work is part of the wide-ranging European project F-ATLAS - Franciscan Landscapes. The Observance between Italy, Portugal and Spain. This work has allowed mapping the implementation process of the Observance from the first foundations - of the end of the XIV century - until the exclaustration of the middle XIX century. The study of this large number of geo-referenced data allowed discerning the existence of several models of monastic implantation. Between the convents whose origin is not related to the Observant order, stands out for its monumentality and rich history the case of Sant Miquel d’Escornalbou (Baix Camp, Tarragona), case study of the present research.
