Hypertension plays an important role in the development of heart damage. In this paper we analyze the topological properties of the capillary network in control and Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat (SHR) heart tissue. Sectional images were segmented, using the Otsu method, and the Hausdorff dimension of the capillary network is evaluated using the box-counting algorithm. Preliminary results indicate SHR images present a slightly worse correspondence with the fractal model, a higher variability between different depths, and a lower fractal dimension.

Abstract

Hypertension plays an important role in the development of heart damage. In this paper we analyze the topological properties of the capillary network in control and Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat (SHR) heart tissue. Sectional images were segmented, using the Otsu method, and the Hausdorff dimension of the capillary network is evaluated using the box-counting algorithm. Preliminary results indicate SHR images present a slightly worse correspondence with the fractal model, a higher variability between different depths, and a lower fractal dimension.
