This article discusses the etymology and meaning of the mysterious hapax legomenon pataracina in Petron. 41, 10 ; it also rejects by means of new arguments H. Fuchs’ hypothesis (accepted by K. Müller and other Petronian scholars) that the phrase coepimus inuitare conuiuarum sermones in the previous paragraph is corrupt. Moreover, it points to unnoticed echoes of Cicero and Alcaeus in Petron. 41, 9-10.
