Una strada con fondale duecentesca: via dei Servi a Firenze

L’odierna via dei Servi a Firenze, asse di collegamento tra la Cattedrale e la basilica della SS. Annunziata, coincide nella prima parte con un percorso di antica origine che attraversava i terreni a nord della città – il cosiddetto Cafaggio – dirigendosi verso Fiesole. Lungo questo percorso, appena fuori dalle mura, è attestato dall’inizio del XII secolo il borgo di Balla; più oltre si insediano nel 1250 i frati Serviti. L’arrivo dei Serviti spinge il Vescovado a iniziare l’urbanizzazione di quest’area, che è agevolata dal tracciamento di un nuovo asse stradale parallelo al precedente e puntato sul convento. La nuova chiesa della SS. Annunziata, iniziata negli anni Sessanta del Duecento, viene costruita in modo da costituire lo sfondo visivo del nuovo asse della via dei Servi. Il rapporto visuale tra strada e sfondo diverrà nel tempo sempre più stringente, man mano che la strada verrà affiancata da edifici e la piazza davanti alla chiesa prenderà forma regolare con la costruzione dei portici degli Innocenti, dei Serviti e del loggiato antistante alla basilica. Sulla base della rilettura di documenti già noti, il saggio ricostruisce la formazione dell'asse di via dei Servi e della piazza davanti alla basilica servita cercando di precisare le fasi di accrescimento di questo spazio e mettendo in luce gli aspetti visuali e ideologici di questo progetto urbano, che lega con un tracciato stradale rettilineo le due più importanti chiese cittadine dedicate alla Madonna, quella della SS. Annunziata e il Duomo. Today’s via dei Servi in Florence, the connecting axis between the Cathedral and the basilica of SS. Annunziata, coincides in the first part with a path of ancient origin that crossed the land north of the city – the so-called Cafaggio – heading towards Fiesole. Along this path, just outside the walls, the borgo di Balla is attested since the beginning of the twelfth century; further on, the Serviti friars settle in 1250. The arrival of the Servites pushes the Bishopric to begin urban- ization of this area, which is facilitated by the tracing of a new road axis parallel to the previous one and aimed at the convent. The new church of SS. Annunziata, begun in the sixties of the thir- teenth century, was built in such a way as to constitute the visual backdrop of the new axis of the via dei Servi. The visual relationship between street and backdrop will become more and more stringent over time, as the street will be flanked by buildings and the square in front of the church will take regular shape with the construction of the portici of the Innocenti, of the Servites and of the loggia in front of the basilica. Based on the rereading of already known documents, the essay reconstructs the formation of the axis of Via dei Servi and the square in front of the Basilica of the Servi di Maria, trying to specify the phases of the growth of this space and highlighting the visual and ideological aspects of this urban project, which links with a straight road layout the two most important city churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary, that of the SS. Annunziata and the Duomo.
