Three ninth-century catalogues from the library of Lorsch mention a manuscript containing Cassiodorus’ letters. According to quite a few modern scholars, this codex included the whole letter collection of Cassiodorus and likely represented the archetype of the Variae, but a careful examination of the text of the catalogues shows that the manuscript of Lorsch included only seventeen epistles and that its relationship with the surviving codices of the Variae cannot be determined.

Abstract
Three ninth-century catalogues from the library of Lorsch mention a manuscript containing Cassiodorus’ letters. According to quite a few modern scholars, this codex included the whole letter collection of Cassiodorus and likely represented the archetype of the Variae, but a careful examination of the text of the catalogues shows that the manuscript of Lorsch included only seventeen epistles and that its relationship with the surviving codices of the Variae cannot be determined.I documenti in FLORE sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
