According to Agathias Hist. 1.18.5, there were Frankish governors (harmostai) in Lucca in 553, but this is unlikely for both historical and philological reasons. The emendation οἱ τῶν Γότθων ἁρμοσταί seems advisable, especially in the light of Agathias’ use of the archaizing term ἁρμοσταί. Lucca was therefore ruled by Gothic governors, possibly acting as comites civitatum / comites Gothorum.

Abstract
According to Agathias Hist. 1.18.5, there were Frankish governors (harmostai) in Lucca in 553, but this is unlikely for both historical and philological reasons. The emendation οἱ τῶν Γότθων ἁρμοσταί seems advisable, especially in the light of Agathias’ use of the archaizing term ἁρμοσταί. Lucca was therefore ruled by Gothic governors, possibly acting as comites civitatum / comites Gothorum.File in questo prodotto:
