Dracontius, Satisfactio 214, mentions Ansila, who has been considered either a Goth or a Moorish chieftain defeated by the Vandals. A closer examination, however, shows that he was a Vandal general who subjugated the Moors. Thus, the date of composition of Dracontius' Satisfactio should be reconsidered, as well as the identity of the ignotus dominus whose praise caused the imprisonment of Dracontius. He probably was neither Theoderic nor a Vandal prince, but emperor Zeno or Anastasius.

Abstract

Dracontius, Satisfactio 214, mentions Ansila, who has been considered either a Goth or a Moorish chieftain defeated by the Vandals. A closer examination, however, shows that he was a Vandal general who subjugated the Moors. Thus, the date of composition of Dracontius' Satisfactio should be reconsidered, as well as the identity of the ignotus dominus whose praise caused the imprisonment of Dracontius. He probably was neither Theoderic nor a Vandal prince, but emperor Zeno or Anastasius.
