The Eblaite spelling MU-GA-NE, which undoubtedly refers to a personal name Mu-ga-NE in some Ebla administrative texts, can instead be read mu-ga-bi2 and considered the local Semitic equivalent of the Sumerogram du11 -ga when attested in records of aspects of the peculiar ritual of purifying the royal palace and asking for good luck for its inhabitants. More precisely, mu-ga-bi2 can be interpreted as a participle 0/2 *muqabbiyum, “wailer”, from qabāyum, “to say, pronounce, speak”.
